[John] Herring said it wasn\u2019t necessarily a huge leap, going from working with youth and street ministry to becoming rector at St. Peter\u2019s. \u201cThe gospel doesn\u2019t change,\u201d\u009d he said, \u201cbut ultimately \u201d\u201d whether you\u2019re dealing with homeless, or you\u2019re dealing with youth or you\u2019re dealing with young adults or you\u2019re dealing with parents \u201d\u201d ultimately, you\u2019re dealing with people who have a story and who are struggling to be faithful and who want to learn. That doesn\u2019t ever change.\u201d\u009d<\/p>\n
When asked if he had a personal philosophy, Herring\u2019s eyes lit up with a warm recollection.<\/p>\n
\u201cI read a book when I was in junior high school,\u201d\u009d he said. \u201cAn autobiography by Gale Sayers, who was a running back for the Chicago Bears. He said that God is first, my family is second and I am third. That\u2019s something that\u2019s always stuck with me. It\u2019s ultimately not about me, it\u2019s about God. Whatever I can do to help people on their way, that\u2019s where the satisfaction comes from.\u201d\u009d<\/p>\n
