In remarkably blunt language, Francis sought to set a new tone for the church, saying it should be a \u201chome for all\u201d\u009d and not a \u201csmall chapel\u201d\u009d focused on doctrine, orthodoxy and a limited agenda of moral teachings.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time,\u201d\u009d the pope told the Rev. Antonio Spadaro, a fellow Jesuit and editor in chief of La Civilt\u00c3\u00a0 Cattolica, the Italian Jesuit journal whose content is routinely approved by the Vatican. \u201cThe dogmatic and moral teachings of the church are not all equivalent. The church\u2019s pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have to find a new balance,\u201d\u009d the pope continued, \u201cotherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel.\u201d\u009d<\/p>\n
