[Sunday] evening\u2019s gath\u00c2\u00ader\u00c2\u00ading at All Saint\u2019s Cathe\u00c2\u00addral after tea on the grounds was an Open\u00c2\u00ading wor\u00c2\u00adship freely flow\u00c2\u00ading with hymns brought by West\u00c2\u00adern mis\u00c2\u00adsion\u00c2\u00adar\u00c2\u00adies yet touched by an African vigor and sway. It also brought var\u00c2\u00adi\u00c2\u00adous speak\u00c2\u00aders to the podium to focus our atten\u00c2\u00adtion on the East African Revival of the 1920s and 30s and which had a sec\u00c2\u00adond or renewed out pour\u00c2\u00ading of the Holy Spirit in the 1970s. Indeed as the Chan\u00c2\u00adcel\u00c2\u00adlor of Uganda Chris\u00c2\u00adt\u00c2\u00adian Uni\u00c2\u00adver\u00c2\u00adsity reminded us in a stir\u00c2\u00adring address\u201d\u201d\u201cWe speak of the East Africa Revival as if it is a relic of his\u00c2\u00adtory. It is not just a relic\u201d\u00a6not just a move\u00c2\u00adment in his\u00c2\u00adtory; it is a liv\u00c2\u00ading move\u00c2\u00adment today.\u201d\u009d (Para\u00c2\u00adphrased from my jot\u00c2\u00adted notes from his address) This move\u00c2\u00adment which has as its cen\u00c2\u00adter the Death and Res\u00c2\u00adur\u00c2\u00adrec\u00c2\u00adtion of Jesus Christ, the call of the Holy Spirit for believ\u00c2\u00aders to \u201cWalk in the Light\u201d\u009d and the neces\u00c2\u00adsity of repen\u00c2\u00adtance, pub\u00c2\u00adlic con\u00c2\u00adfes\u00c2\u00adsion of sins and putting of wrongs right in the believer\u2019s life, as well as a cor\u00c2\u00adre\u00c2\u00adspond\u00c2\u00ading call for humil\u00c2\u00adity and bro\u00c2\u00adken\u00c2\u00adness, was and remains a mighty pres\u00c2\u00adence in the Church in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tan\u00c2\u00adza\u00c2\u00adnia. This revival like so many great revivals in his\u00c2\u00adtory was pre\u00c2\u00addom\u00c2\u00adi\u00c2\u00adnately a lay move\u00c2\u00adment. It calls every man to be a Bible stu\u00c2\u00addent, respon\u00c2\u00adsive to the lead\u00c2\u00ading of the Holy Spirit, tran\u00c2\u00adscend\u00c2\u00ading denom\u00c2\u00adi\u00c2\u00adna\u00c2\u00adtional bound\u00c2\u00adaries yet seek\u00c2\u00ading to keep (in the phrase I remem\u00c2\u00adber from sev\u00c2\u00aderal decades ago in the Renewal Move\u00c2\u00adment of the 1970s and 80s) \u201cthe fire in the fire\u00c2\u00adplace.\u201d\u009d Indeed as the Chan\u00c2\u00adcel\u00c2\u00adlor noted, from the heart of this liv\u00c2\u00ading move\u00c2\u00adment today\u2019s Church is pre\u00c2\u00adsented with some prob\u00c2\u00ading questions:<\/p>\n
