{"id":46401,"date":"2014-10-16T17:00:22","date_gmt":"2014-10-16T17:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/site\/2017\/2\/1985\/law_and_religion_uk_lords_debate_women_in_the_episcopate\/"},"modified":"2014-10-16T17:00:22","modified_gmt":"2014-10-16T17:00:22","slug":"law_and_religion_uk_lords_debate_women_in_the_episcopate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=46401","title":{"rendered":"(Law and Religion UK) Lords debate women in the episcopate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although Hansard now records the ABC\u2019s response to Lady Howe\u2019s Q4, in view of the nature of the debate[1] and his non-governmental position, such assurances carry different weight from those made by a government minister at the dispatch box and subsequently relied upon under Pepper v Hart.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to the application of the Equality Act, the Archbishop\u2019s specification of \u201cparochial appointments\u201d\u009d implicitly acknowledges that the House of Bishops considers other appointments differently, i.e. hospital chaplains.  With regard to remarriage after divorce, this dispensation is not strictly within the gift of the bishops, as clergy are provided  a \u201cconscience clause\u201d\u009d  directly through s8(2) Matrimonial Causes Act 1965.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday 20 October, the House of Commons will consider the Motion: \u201cTo approve a Church of England Measure relating to women bishops\u201d\u009d.
