But that won\u2019t mean a rush to the altar at Louisiana churches.<\/p>\n<p>No churches in the state have permission to marry gay couples until Nov. 29, the first Sunday of the Advent season. That\u2019s when two new marriage rites using gender-neutral language become available for church services.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, priests who are opposed to same-sex marriage can, as a matter of conscience, refuse to officiate at such ceremonies. In Louisiana, that\u2019s the norm.<\/p>\n<p>Only a handful of the 97 Episcopal churches in the state have indicated they are planning to start holding same-sex weddings when the new rites take effect.
