While the most famous accounts of the Great Fire, by diarists Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn, didn\u2019t see the light of day until the 19th century, broadside ballads with titles such as \u201cThe Londoners\u2019 Lamentation\u201d\u009d and \u201cLondon Mourning in Ashes\u201d\u009d began to appear on the blackened streets within weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Some were eloquent in their simplicity: \u201cOld London that, \/ Hath stood in State, \/ above six hundred years, \/ In six days space \/ Woe and alas! \/ is burn\u2019d and drown\u2019d in tears.\u201d\u009d But there were also heroic couplets and Pindaric odes and Latin verses. There were outrageously mannered compositions \u201d\u201c \u201cAnd still the surly flame doth fiercer hiss \/ By an Antiperistasis\u201d\u009d \u201d\u201c and conceits of metaphysical weirdness.
