She hesitated at first, but finally came out with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma is transgender,\u201d\u009d she said matter-of-factly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d\u009d I had heard the term, but never thought much about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma is a boy,\u201d\u009d Hannah said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Emma\u2019s a girl. She can\u2019t be a boy,\u201d\u009d I said.
