{"id":57416,"date":"2017-02-14T21:21:38","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T21:21:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/site\/2017\/2\/1985\/c_of_e_general_synod_votes_to_retain_marriage_banns\/"},"modified":"2017-02-14T21:21:38","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T21:21:38","slug":"c_of_e_general_synod_votes_to_retain_marriage_banns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=57416","title":{"rendered":"(C of E) General Synod votes to retain marriage banns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The General Synod has rejected moves to end the legal requirement to read banns for couples intending to marry in church services.<\/p>\n<p>Members voted against a Private Member&#8217;s Motion brought by Rev Stephen Trott, from Peterborough Diocese, calling for draft legislation to be drawn up to transfer &#8216;ecclesiastical preliminaries&#8217;, the legal paperwork currently carried out by Church of England clergy before a church wedding, to civil registrars.<\/p>\n<p>The motion called for a similar system to the one in operation in Scotland since 1977, when banns were replaced by a Marriage Schedule issued by the civil registrar.<\/p>\n<p>Rev Trott told the General Synod that administering banns was &#8216;fraught with difficulties&#8217; and a cause of &#8216;great concern and even stress&#8217; to clergy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/media-centre\/news\/2017\/02\/general-synod-votes-to-retain-marriage-banns.aspx\">Read it all<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The General Synod has rejected moves to end the legal requirement to read banns for couples intending to marry in church services.
