I sometimes think that Catholic theology operates on a super high frequency that just doesn\u2019t register on some people\u2019s hearing. That\u2019s the conclusion I came to when I read veteran NY Times Vatican-beat reporter Alessandra Stanley\u2019s summing up of the papal visit so far. Comparing it to Prince Charles\u2019 second wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles, (in contrast to JPII\u2019s more Princess Diana-like \u201cextravanga\u201d\u009d visits) was clever, but trite. Has the trip, for her, really been about \u201cseamlessly binding together the thorniest Vatican troubles \u201d\u201d pedophile priests, shrinking parishes, nonobservant believers \u201d\u201d with papal mystique and fun Vatican facts.\u201d\u009d This is someone who has covered the Vatican for years. She has ears to hear (and eyes to read)\u201d\u201ddid she miss the substance of the Pope\u2019s statements, which were nothing less than a radical critique of how American Catholics live their faith?<\/p>\n
