At least five plays about heroin abuse have been produced in northeast Ohio alone in the last year as the state\u2019s residents grapple with\u00a0the surging epidemic<\/a>. The Columbus Dispatch\u00a0reported in May<\/a>\u00a0that at least 4,149 Ohioans died from unintentional overdoses of heroin, fentanyl and other drugs in 2016, a 36 percent jump from the prior year. This year\u2019s overdose fatalities are set to outpace last year\u2019s, according to the report.<\/span><\/p>\n

Heroin-themed plays have surfaced elsewhere recently, too: at\u00a0a high school<\/a>\u00a0in New Market, Md.;\u00a0a community theater<\/a>\u00a0in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; and\u00a0a children\u2019s theater<\/a>\u00a0in Roanoke, Va. And on Broadway this spring, the new play \u201cSweat\u201d \u2014 which won the Pulitzer Prize in drama in April \u2014 featured two characters who abuse heroin in working-class Reading, Pa.<\/span><\/p>\n
