{"id":63628,"date":"2017-09-20T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T13:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=63628"},"modified":"2017-09-20T05:43:24","modified_gmt":"2017-09-20T09:43:24","slug":"npr-stanislav-petrov-the-man-who-saved-the-world-dies-at-77","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=63628","title":{"rendered":"(NPR) Stanislav Petrov, &#8216;The Man Who Saved The World,&#8217; Dies At 77"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stanislav Petrov was a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet Union&#8217;s Air Defense Forces, and his job was to monitor his country&#8217;s satellite system, which was looking for any possible nuclear weapons launches by the United States.<\/p>\n<p>He was on the overnight shift in the early morning hours of Sept. 26, 1983, when the computers sounded an alarm, indicating that the U.S. had launched five nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The siren howled, but I just sat there for a few seconds, staring at the big, back-lit, red screen with the word &#8216;launch&#8217; on it,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-24280831\">Petrov told the BBC in 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was already a moment of extreme tension in the Cold War. On Sept. 1 of that year, the Soviet Union\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1983\/09\/02\/world\/us-says-soviet-downed-korean-airliner-269-lost-reagan-denounces-wanton-act.html\">shot down a Korean Air Lines plane<\/a>\u00a0that had drifted into Soviet airspace, killing all 269 people on board, including a U.S. congressman. The episode led the U.S. and the Soviets to exchange warnings and threats.<\/p>\n<p>Petrov had to act quickly.
