{"id":63641,"date":"2017-09-20T12:20:40","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T16:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=63641"},"modified":"2017-09-20T08:39:34","modified_gmt":"2017-09-20T12:39:34","slug":"local-paper-some-leaders-say-the-time-is-now-to-act-to-save-charleston-south-carolina-from-seas-which-have-risen-4-2-in-33-yrs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=63641","title":{"rendered":"(Local Paper) Some leaders say the time is now to act to save Charleston, South Carolina,  from seas which have risen 4.2&#8243; in 33 yrs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fast-forward 33 years.<\/p>\n<p>The sea level has risen 4.2 inches since then.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the city&#8217;s low-lying areas saw 50 days of nuisance flooding, a record.<\/p>\n<p>Three mega storms in the past three years turned the city of Charleston\u2019s largest medical district into a virtually inaccessible island.<\/p>\n<p>And some city officials still talk about the \u201cgenerational challenge\u201d that rising seas present.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t sit well with Mike Seekings, a city councilman who spent the past few days tromping around city streets as nuisance tides once again cut off thoroughfares in his district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night between 8:30 and 9 o\u2019clock, there was a foot of water at Broad and Lockwood,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can\u2019t live in a city when roads are closed on good days and roads to hospitals are closed on bad days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is no longer a generational challenge, he added. \u201cWe\u2019ve been talking about doing things for so long.
