In September, a shooter\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2017\/09\/25\/how-nashville-church-shooting-burnette-chapel-church-christ-unfolded-timeline\/700049001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed one person<\/a>\u00a0and injured seven others after Sunday worship at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ outside Nashville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cThe prevailing problem is denial,\u201d said [church security expert Carl] Chinn. \u201cPeople think, \u2018It won\u2019t happen here.\u2019 If they were following the news, they would know it\u2019s happening at small churches in small towns and big churches in big cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cThe denial is worse in churches because we believe God will protect us,\u201d he told CT. \u201cI believe God will protect us \u2026 but that doesn\u2019t mean we don\u2019t have to be intentional about security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Chinn previously\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchlawandtax.com\/blog\/2016\/june\/violent-incidents-at-churches-are-rising.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+christianitytoday%2Fchurchsafety+%28ChurchSafety.com%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that 2015 marked a record year for violence on religious property or involving senior pastors, with 248 incidents and 76 deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cI don\u2019t know how many wakeup calls it will take,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/news\/2017\/november\/mass-shooting-sutherland-springs-first-baptist-church-texas.html\">Read it all<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Violent incidents in churches are on the rise, including high-profile shootings in sanctuaries.
