For Anglican Bishop of Dunedin the Rt Rev Dr Steven Benford belief and community are more important than buildings.<\/p>\n

For this reason, neglected churches with struggling congregations should be able to “die with dignity”, he said.<\/p>\n

“What does it say to society in general if you have a crumbling place that\u2019s falling down with a sign that says Anglican Church.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s a bit like a funeral for a loved aunt.<\/p>\n

“We have to thank God for what\u2019s happened, but acknowledge that things have moved on.”<\/p>\n

Dr Benford was ordained at St Paul\u2019s Cathedral in September.<\/p>\n
