Gabriel, from heaven’s king
\nSent to the maid sweet,
\nBrought her blissful tidings,
\nAnd fair he did her greet:
\n“Hail be thou, full of grace aright,
\nFor God’s Son, this heaven’s light,
\nFor man’s love
\nWill man become
\nAnd take
\nFlesh of thee, maiden bright,
\nMankind free for to make
\nFrom sin and devil’s might.”<\/p>\n
Gently him did answer
\nThe gentle maiden then:
\n“In what way can I bear
\nA child without a man?”
\nThe angel said, “Fear thee naught;
\nThrough the Holy Ghost shall be wrought
\nThis same thing
\nOf which tiding
\nI bring.
\nAll mankind will be bought [redeemed]
\nThrough thy sweet childing,
\nAnd out of torment brought.”<\/p>\n
When the maiden understood
\nAnd the angel’s words heard,
\nGently with a gentle mind
\nTo the angel she answered:
\n“Our Lord’s serving maiden iwis [indeed]
\nI am, who here above is.
\nConcerning me
\nFulfilled shall be
\nThy saw, [your words]
\nThat I, since his will it is,
\nA maiden, without law, [i.e. outside the law of nature]
\nOf mother will have the bliss.”<\/p>\n
