{"id":70614,"date":"2018-04-27T08:00:21","date_gmt":"2018-04-27T12:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=70614"},"modified":"2018-04-27T06:58:21","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T10:58:21","slug":"church-times-clergy-and-laity-doubt-accuracy-of-letter-from-william-nye-to-the-episcopal-church-tec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=70614","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) Clergy and laity doubt accuracy of letter from William Nye to the Episcopal Church (TEC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a response to a consultation by the Episcopal Church on same-sex marriage (<a tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2018\/20-april\/news\/uk\/nye-letter-warns-about-same-sex-marriage-rites\">News, 20 April<\/a>), Mr Nye said that there had not been time to consult the wider Church, and that it \u201creflects discussions among staff of the Church\u2019s Archbishops\u2019 Council only\u201d. This raises questions of governance, says a letter to the\u00a0<em>Church Times,<\/em>\u00a0signed by more than 110 members of the clergy and laity, who say that they wish to \u201cdissociate\u201d themselves from Mr Nye\u2019s response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless the content of the letter is tested synodically, he surely cannot claim to speak for the Church of England as a whole,\u201d they write. \u201cMr Nye\u2019s letter, written on Archbishops\u2019 Council stationery, gives the impression that he was acting as an agent of the Council and its trustees and writing with its authority. But, as he acknowledges, his response is simply the fruit of conversations held among a small cadre of professional staff. As a governance matter, this will not, we think, do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canon Simon Butler, Vicar of St Mary\u2019s, Battersea, and a member of the Archbishops\u2019 Council, confirmed online last Friday that Mr Nye\u2019s letter \u201cdoes not reflect the views of the Archbishops\u2019 Council. We have never been asked. . .
