{"id":70947,"date":"2018-05-08T08:00:03","date_gmt":"2018-05-08T12:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=70947"},"modified":"2018-05-08T06:45:37","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T10:45:37","slug":"stephen-noll-the-episcopal-church-and-trial-use-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=70947","title":{"rendered":"Stephen Noll&#8211;The Episcopal Church And Trial [use] Marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the ponderous\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.generalconvention.org\/bluebook2018\/\">Blue Book<\/a>\u00a0of materials for the Episcopal General Convention in July, the Task Force on the Study of Marriage proposes a Resolution (A085) to revise, for trial use of course, the Prayer Book itself by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>defining marriage as a \u201ccovenant between\u00a0a man and a woman\u00a0two people\u2019<\/li>\n<li>amending the Proper Prefaces on Marriage to read: \u201cBecause in the love of\u00a0wife and husband\u00a0two people in faithful love\u2026<\/li>\n<li>amending the Catechism to say: \u201cHoly Matrimony is Christian marriage, in which two people\u00a0the woman and man\u00a0enter into a life-long union\u201d and adding an additional section defining the\u00a0procreative\u00a0purpose in terms of \u201cthe gift and heritage of children\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They make clear, in addition, that passing these \u201ctrial use\u201d changes may count as a \u201cfirst reading\u201d for a permanent revision of the Prayer Book by 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Not content with rewriting the marriage rite, the Task Force proposes a Resolution (Ao86) to authorize a rite of \u201cBlessing of a Lifelong Relationship,\u201d warning gravely that these rites \u201cshall not be used for mere convenience.\u201d So now a couple can forgo marriage altogether and be blessed.
