{"id":72354,"date":"2018-06-26T06:00:54","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T10:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=72354"},"modified":"2018-06-26T18:02:58","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T22:02:58","slug":"from-the-morning-bible-readings-216","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=72354","title":{"rendered":"From the Morning Bible Readings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span class=\"text Rom-4-1\">What then shall we say about Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? <\/span> <span id=\"en-RSV-28003\" class=\"text Rom-4-2\">For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. <\/span> <span id=\"en-RSV-28004\" class=\"text Rom-4-3\">For what does the scripture say? \u201cAbraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-RSV-28005\" class=\"text Rom-4-4\">Now to one who works, his wages are not reckoned as a gift but as his due. <\/span> <span id=\"en-RSV-28006\" class=\"text Rom-4-5\">And to one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness. <\/span> <span id=\"en-RSV-28007\" class=\"text Rom-4-6\">So also David pronounces a blessing upon the man to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-RSV-28008\" class=\"text Rom-4-7\">\u201cBlessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered;<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-RSV-28009\" class=\"text Rom-4-8\">blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not reckon his sin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span id=\"en-RSV-28010\" class=\"text Rom-4-9\">Is this blessing pronounced only upon the circumcised, or also upon the uncircumcised? We say that faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness. <\/span> <span id=\"en-RSV-28011\" class=\"text Rom-4-10\">How then was it reckoned to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. <\/span> <span id=\"en-RSV-28012\" class=\"text Rom-4-11\">He received circumcision as a sign or seal of the righteousness which he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised and who thus have righteousness reckoned to them, <\/span> <span id=\"en-RSV-28013\" class=\"text Rom-4-12\">and likewise the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but also follow the example of the faith which our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Romans 4:1-12<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What then shall we say about Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh?
