{"id":77786,"date":"2019-01-27T17:01:04","date_gmt":"2019-01-27T22:01:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=77786"},"modified":"2019-01-27T16:05:32","modified_gmt":"2019-01-27T21:05:32","slug":"sunday-london-times-revealed-how-big-tech-pushes-teens-like-molly-russell-to-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=77786","title":{"rendered":"(Sunday [London] Times) Revealed: how Big Tech pushes teens like Molly Russell to suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty families have accused technology giants of abetting their children\u2019s suicides in the wake of the death of 14-year-old Molly Russell, as the health secretary told social media sites to take responsibility for their effect on young lives.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/molly-russells-father-cutting-biting-burning-my-daughter-was-shown-it-all-on-social-media-x0grb8vgt\">interview with The Sunday Times<\/a>, Molly\u2019s father, Ian, criticised the online scrapbook site Pinterest, as well as Instagram, for hosting disturbing content that he believes played a part in his daughter\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more I looked [into Molly\u2019s online accounts], the more there was that chill horror that I was getting a glimpse into something that had such profound effects on my lovely daughter,\u201d he said. \u201cPinterest has a huge amount to answer for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Papyrus, a charity that works to prevent youth suicides, said it <span class=\"paywall-EAB47CFD\">had been contacted by 30 families in the past week. Parents said they suspected social media had played a part in their children\u2019s suicides.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"Article-content paywall-EAB47CFD\">\n<p>A Sunday Times investigation found numerous graphic images of self-harm on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/pinterest-emailed-suicide-tips-after-molly-russells-death-8x9t8w6wb\">Pinterest <\/a>that could be viewed by children as young as 13.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/a37b0dda-21ba-11e9-bf10-a69b3e42a388\">Read it all<\/a> (subscription needed).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Awful.
