Only imagined ones."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s worth noting that [Anthea] Butler, in that same speech, went on to decry evangelicalism\u2019s \u201cproblem of whiteness.\u201d She called out white evangelical scholars\u2019 inability or unwillingness to confront that problem. [David] Bebbington\u2019s four points, Butler asserted, are in fact culturally and racially specific.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, a recent LifeWay survey found that fewer than half of those who self-identify as evangelicals \u201cstrongly agree\u201d with core evangelical beliefs. Many \u201cevangelicals,\u201d according to another LifeWay Research survey, in fact hold heretical beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>When a large number of people who self-identify as evangelicals fail to ascribe to what some scholars have dictated to be the essential tenets of evangelicalism, does that mean that they are not actually evangelicals?
