Quebec\u2019s plan to restrict teachers\u2019 right to wear religious symbols, she said, was going to hurt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text\">\u201cAs a woman, I don\u2019t accept that you dictate to me how I can dress,\u201d she told the MNAs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text\">Ms. Chelbi\u2019s comments were both pointed and remarkable: After six days of committee hearings into Quebec\u2019s disputed legislation on religious symbols, she was the first and only teacher in a headscarf to address politicians about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text\">The Coalition Avenir Qu\u00e9bec government heard 36 speakers at its hearings on Bill 21, which would forbid police officers, prosecutors, schoolteachers and other public servants from wearing religious items on the job.
