It would help if reporters did some homework by reading <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/apost_constitutions\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_apc_15081990_ex-corde-ecclesiae.html\">&#8220;<em>Ex Corde Ecclesiae<\/em> (From the Heart of the Church)\u201d<\/a> \u2014 that\u2019s the urgent 1990 encyclical by Pope John Paul II on reforming Catholic education. For St. John Paul II, \u201creform\u201d meant asking schools to defend the basics of the Catholic faith, in words and deeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Journalists also need to familiarize themselves with this U.S. Supreme Court case \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2011\/10-553\">Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. EEOC<\/a>. The key: Private religious schools and institutions have the right to take doctrinal issues into account when hiring and firing teachers and staffers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Why? Because the professionals in these academic communities are \u201cministers,\u201d in that their lives and work are linked to the doctrines affirmed in their job descriptions, contracts and\/or covenants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s important that reporters \u2014 the <em>USA Today<\/em> story is only one example \u2014 frequently mention this \u201cminister\u201d status, without explaining the Supreme Court context. This \u201cminister\u201d status, obviously, doesn\u2019t mean that all teachers, staffers, etc., are ordained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/christians-are-pro-life-after-birth-too-11560465692\">Read it all<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So what should editors do, if the goal is to produce accurate, fair-minded coverage on this issue?
