{"id":83418,"date":"2019-07-05T09:00:18","date_gmt":"2019-07-05T13:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=83418"},"modified":"2019-07-05T06:07:00","modified_gmt":"2019-07-05T10:07:00","slug":"church-times-c-of-e-synod-lazy-and-incurious-about-safeguarding-scandals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=83418","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) C of E Synod \u2018lazy and incurious\u2019 about safeguarding scandals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/general-synod\">General Synod<\/a> has been \u201clazy and incurious\u201d despite a wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/safeguarding\">safeguarding<\/a> scandals, a lay member said this week.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Sewell, a representative from the diocese of Rochester, expressed disappointment that the Archbishops had declined a proposal to add to the agenda a motion welcoming a letter from the bishops of the diocese of Blackburn, which warned that Church\u2019s mission was \u201cfatally undermined\u201d by the abuse crisis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2019\/21-june\/news\/uk\/safeguarding-not-just-about-box-ticking-say-senior-clergy-in-blackburn\">News, 21<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2019\/28-june\/news\/uk\/synod-should-welcome-bishops-safeguarding-letter\"> 28 June<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>He joined David Lamming, a lay member from St Edmundsbury &amp; Ipswich, in making the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when the Church is nosediving into controversies over IICSA and Jonathan Fletcher, this motion was carefully designed to bring us together around a pastoral letter that prioritised repentance, humility, and genuine concern for victims,\u201d Mr Sewell said on Monday. It deliberately sought support from General Synod, an institution that has historically been lazy and incurious as scandal after scandal broke.
