Patron of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Europe?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Europe<\/a> &amp; of monks (BM) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mLVV3bVwJj\">pic.twitter.com\/mLVV3bVwJj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John McCafferty (@jdmccafferty) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdmccafferty\/status\/1016934110290481152?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 11, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>Holy Scripture, brethren, cries out to us, saying,<br \/>\n&#8220;Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled,<br \/>\nand he who humbles himself shall be exalted&#8221; (Luke 14:11).<br \/>\nIn saying this it shows us<br \/>\nthat all exaltation is a kind of pride,<br \/>\nagainst which the Prophet proves himself to be on guard<br \/>\nwhen he says,<br \/>\n&#8220;Lord, my heart is not exalted,<br \/>\nnor are mine eyes lifted up;<br \/>\nneither have I walked in great matters,<br \/>\nnor in wonders above me&#8221; (Ps. 130[131]:1)<br \/>\nBut how has he acted?<br \/>\n&#8220;Rather have I been of humble mind<br \/>\nthan exalting myself;<br \/>\nas a weaned child on its mother&#8217;s breast,<br \/>\nso You solace my soul&#8221; (Ps. 130[131]:2).<\/p>\n<p>Hence, brethren,<br \/>\nif we wish to reach the very highest point of humility<br \/>\nand to arrive speedily at that heavenly exaltation<br \/>\nto which ascent is made through the humility of this present life,<br \/>\nwe must<br \/>\nby our ascending actions<br \/>\nerect the ladder Jacob saw in his dream,<br \/>\non which Angels appeared to him descending and ascending.<br \/>\nBy that descent and ascent<br \/>\nwe must surely understand nothing else than this,<br \/>\nthat we descend by self-exaltation and ascend by humility.<br \/>\nAnd the ladder thus set up is our life in the world,<br \/>\nwhich the Lord raises up to heaven if our heart is humbled.<br \/>\nFor we call our body and soul the sides of the ladder,<br \/>\nand into these sides our divine vocation has inserted<br \/>\nthe different steps of humility and discipline we must climb.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;The Rule of Benedict, Chapter 7<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>11 July: feast of St Benedict of Nursia &#8211; moved from 21 March.
