The trauma of Brexit confronts the four nations of the United Kingdom in different ways but \u2013 given the centrality to the debate of a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/by-riding-the-tiger-of-populism-the-conservatives-may-have-destroyed-the-uk-61614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">resurgent English nationalism<\/a> \u2013 it is most painful for England, which is where the Church of England\u2019s mission is primarily directed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em; color: #26282a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\" data-reactid=\"12\">Since 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2018\/21-september\/news\/uk\/bishop-of-leeds-we-will-tell-the-truth-about-brexit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">several individual bishops<\/a>, some in their capacity as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/churchinparliament.org\/2019\/01\/09\/archbishop-of-canterbury-a-no-deal-brexit-would-be-a-moral-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Lords Spiritual<\/a>\u201d have sought to contribute to this debate, often with balance and insight. Yet \u2013 unlike both the (Anglican) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2018\/25-may\/news\/uk\/scottish-episcopal-church-general-synod-brexit-resolution-second-referendum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Episcopal Church<\/a> and the (Presbyterian) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com\/news\/church-of-scotland-s-general-assembly-opposes-brexit-1-4137491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Church of Scotland<\/a> \u2013 the Church of England has so far been unable to bring any authoritative collective voice to the national conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em; color: #26282a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\" data-reactid=\"13\">No debate on Brexit has taken place in General Synod (the Church of England\u2019s governing body), either before or since the 2016 referendum. While the House of Bishops was able in 2015 to produce an unusually substantial statement before the general election \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2017-11\/whoismyneighbour-pages.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Who is my Neighbour?<\/a> \u2013 it has so far delivered no formal public statement on Brexit at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em; color: #26282a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\" data-reactid=\"14\">One obvious explanation for this official silence suggests itself. A <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/brexit\/2018\/09\/20\/how-anglicans-tipped-the-brexit-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">referendum exit poll<\/a> conducted by Greg Smith and Linda Woodhead revealed that English Anglicans are as divided on Brexit as the general population, with 66% reportedly having voted Leave. Since almost all bishops were Remainers, a collective intervention on Brexit could have proved incendiary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em; color: #26282a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\" data-reactid=\"15\">But this cannot be a sufficient account of the church\u2019s institutional reticence. The Church of England has at times been prepared to risk significant controversy in its public interventions.
