{"id":89539,"date":"2020-02-13T08:30:40","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T13:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=89539"},"modified":"2020-02-12T18:37:18","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T23:37:18","slug":"church-times-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=89539","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) General Synod accepts that \u2018serious money\u2019 must be found for abuse survivors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Calls for \u201cproper\u201d and \u201cjust\u201d redress for survivors of clerical abuse, with \u201cserious money\u201d, were made in an emotional debate on <a tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/safeguarding\">safeguarding<\/a> in the <a tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/general-synod\">General Synod <\/a>on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The Synod voted unanimously for an amended motion to endorse the response of the <a tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/archbishops-council\">Archbishops\u2019 Council<\/a> to the recommendations made by the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (<a tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/independent-inquiry-into-child-sexual-abuse-iicsa\">IICSA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The amendment, brought by the next lead Bishop of safeguarding, the <a tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/bishop-of-huddersfield\">Bishop of Huddersfield<\/a>, Dr Jonathan Gibbs, asked that the original motion be reinforced by \u201cconcrete actions\u201d. Earlier attempts to strengthen it had foundered (<a tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2020\/7-february\/news\/uk\/safeguarding-amendments-to-give-synod-motion-more-teeth-are-rejected\">News, 7 February<\/a>). Dr Gibbs\u2019s amendment also urged the National Safeguarding Steering Group to commit to a \u201cfully survivor-centred approach to safeguarding, including arrangements for redress for survivors\u201d and to update the Synod on the progress on the IICSA recommendations not later than 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Redress was a small phrase with large implications, Dr Gibbs said. \u201cIt will mean serious money [and] changes in ways we handle claims and complaints.\u201d Safeguarding responses must be \u201cshaped by the righteousness and compassion of God\u2019s Kingdom, not by the short-term and short-sighted financial and reputational interests of the Church,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2020\/14-february\/news\/uk\/synod-accepts-that-serious-money-must-be-found-for-abuse-survivors\">Read it all<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">LATEST.
