{"id":89803,"date":"2020-02-21T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=89803"},"modified":"2020-02-21T07:02:35","modified_gmt":"2020-02-21T12:02:35","slug":"church-times-climate-battle-must-start-right-now-says-bishop-holtam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=89803","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) Climate battle must start right now, says Bishop Holtam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/bishop-of-salisbury\">Bishop of Salisbury<\/a>, the Rt Revd Nick Holtam, the Church of England\u2019s lead bishop on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/climate-change\"> environmental issues<\/a>, is writing to all bishops and diocesan secretaries this week, in response to the target set at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/general-synod\">General Synod<\/a> last week to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions to net zero by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The most immediate problem facing the C of E is that it has no idea what its carbon footprint is at present. Bishop Holtam will ask parishes to use a new Energy Footprint Tool to measure the energy they use. The online tool also generates a dashboard to show churches how they compare. For details, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/more\/policy-and-thinking\/our-views\/environment-and-climate-change\/energyfootprinting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cofe.io\/footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the new target, 15 years before the official recommendation, the Bishop said: \u201cWe aren\u2019t under any illusion that this will be easy. Synod\u2019s target sets a serious challenge for the whole Church to examine urgently the steps necessary to achieve the kind of year-on-year carbon reductions we need. This is a national goal which will need more than 16,000 local plans supported by the right policies and resource.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the science tells us there\u2019s no time to lose if we are to limit the warming of the planet humans are causing.
