{"id":90377,"date":"2020-03-09T08:00:53","date_gmt":"2020-03-09T12:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=90377"},"modified":"2020-03-09T07:20:44","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T11:20:44","slug":"guardian-coronavirus-nine-reasons-to-be-reassured","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=90377","title":{"rendered":"(Guardian) Coronavirus: nine reasons to be reassured"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here, courtesy of a number of scientists but mainly Ignacio L\u00f3pez-Go\u00f1i, a professor of microbiology and virology at the University of Navarra in Spain, are what might hopefully prove a few reassuring facts about the new coronavirus:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>We know what it is.<\/strong> As <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/dix-informations-rassurantes-a-propos-du-coronavirus-132940\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">L\u00f3pez-Go\u00f1i wrote for the Conversation France<\/a>, the virus causing cases of severe pneumonia in Wuhan was identified within seven days of the official announcement on 31 December, and, three days after that, the gene sequence was available. HIV, by contrast, took two years to identify after it first appeared in mid-1981, L\u00f3pez-Goni noted. We also know the virus is natural, that it is related to a virus found in bats, and that it can mutate, but does not appear to do so very often.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We can test for it.<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>By 13 January \u2013 three days after the gene sequence was published \u2013 a reliable test was available, developed by scientists at the department of virology at Berlin\u2019s Charit\u00e9 university hospital with help from experts in Rotterdam, London and Hong Kong.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We know it can be contained (albeit at considerable cost).<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>China\u2019s draconian quarantine and containment measures appear to be working. On Thursday 120 new cases were reported in Wuhan, the lowest figure for six weeks, and, for the first time since the start of the outbreak, none at all in the rest of Hubei province. Several Chinese provinces have had no new cases for a fortnight and more are reopening their schools. In many countries, infections are in defined clusters, which should allow them to be more readily contained.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Catching it is not <\/strong><em><strong>that<\/strong><\/em><strong> easy (if we are careful) and we can kill it quite easily (provided we try)<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/07\/coronavirus-reasons-to-be-reassured\">Read it all<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This is a useful <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/guardian?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@guardian<\/a> piece by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonhenley?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@jonhenley<\/a> about the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> outbreak.
