\u201cIt\u2019s the uncertainty that causes the maximum distress,\u201d said Lakshmi Vijayakumar, a psychiatrist and suicide expert in Chennai, who added that the pandemic had led to significantly more suicides among professionals. \u201cThey are burnt out and Zoomed out,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is the fear of infection and financial insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n
The pandemic has compounded India\u2019s economic challenges, with millions losing their jobs. The country\u2019s economic output shrank by 24 per cent in the three months to June compared with the same period last year, the steepest fall among the world\u2019s largest economies.<\/p>\n
While casual labourers are beginning to pick up more work, middle-class professionals are still struggling.<\/p>\n
