{"id":97834,"date":"2020-12-22T16:22:48","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T21:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=97834"},"modified":"2020-12-22T18:41:11","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T23:41:11","slug":"undeterred-by-icc-decision-uighurs-hail-eu-uk-steps-toward-holding-china-accountable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=97834","title":{"rendered":"(The World) Undeterred by ICC decision, Uighurs hail EU, UK steps toward holding China accountable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After more than 70 years of Chinese rule over the <a class=\"GoogleAnalyticsET-processed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FP_20200914_china_oppression_xinjiang_millward_peterson.pdf\">Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region<\/a>, there\u2019s mounting evidence that in recent years, their occupation has intensified into an environment of strict surveillance, with more than a million Uighurs held in internment camps.<\/p>\n<p>Reports show many are forced to pick cotton and work in factories that supply international brands and that some Uighurs are even subjected to forced sterilizations and organ harvesting.<\/p>\n<p>For several years, Beijing repeatedly denied those allegations, while companies like Nike said they\u2019ve made sure they\u2019re not using Uighur slave labor. But some recent developments suggest 2021 may see a breakthrough in the Uighurs\u2019 long struggle for justice, with help from a new group of international lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m accusing the Chinese authorities of the worst crime of the 21st century.
