{"id":98818,"date":"2021-01-22T09:00:01","date_gmt":"2021-01-22T14:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=98818"},"modified":"2021-01-22T17:50:00","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T22:50:00","slug":"church-times-hospital-chaplains-at-the-core-of-coronavirus-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=98818","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) Hospital chaplains at the core of coronavirus care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The coronavirus has swept away any idea that chaplains are optional extras or \u201cgenteel outsiders\u201d, the president of the College of Healthcare Chaplains, Dr Simon Harrison, has said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the first wave of the virus, there was a bit of the \u2018Perhaps the chaplaincy should stay away for a bit until we get over this,\u2019\u201d Dr Harrison, who is also lead chaplain at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, said on Monday. \u201cThat has long passed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staff support is significantly more embedded into the infrastructure, to the extent that some trusts have newly recruited dedicated staff chaplains.<\/p>\n<p>The impact of the virus on chaplaincy teams themselves has also heightened the sense of being part of the hospital team. All were now hands-on and very busy, Dr Harrison said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of fatigue and ongoing anxiety among chaplains, but collegiality is at an all-time high.
