Hear this, O house of Jacob,
\nwho are called by the name of Israel,
\n and who came forth from the loins of Judah;
\nwho swear by the name of the Lord,
\n and confess the God of Israel,
\n but not in truth or right.
\nFor they call themselves after the holy city,
\n and stay themselves on the God of Israel;
\n the Lord of hosts is his name.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe former things I declared of old,
\n they went forth from my mouth and I made them known;
\n then suddenly I did them and they came to pass.
\nBecause I know that you are obstinate,
\n and your neck is an iron sinew
\n and your forehead brass,
\nI declared them to you from of old,
\n before they came to pass I announced them to you,
\nlest you should say, \u2018My idol did them,
\n my graven image and my molten image commanded them.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have heard; now see all this;
\n and will you not declare it?
\nFrom this time forth I make you hear new things,
\n hidden things which you have not known.
\nThey are created now, not long ago;
\n before today you have never heard of them,
\n lest you should say, \u2018Behold, I knew them.\u2019
\nYou have never heard, you have never known,
\n from of old your ear has not been opened.
\nFor I knew that you would deal very treacherously,
\n and that from birth you were called a rebel.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor my name\u2019s sake I defer my anger,
\n for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you,
\n that I may not cut you off.
\nBehold, I have refined you, but not like silver;
\n I have tried you in the furnace of affliction.
\nFor my own sake, for my own sake, I do it,
\n for how should my name be profaned?
\n My glory I will not give to another.<\/p>\n
