{"id":99863,"date":"2021-02-26T07:00:12","date_gmt":"2021-02-26T12:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=99863"},"modified":"2021-02-26T06:17:24","modified_gmt":"2021-02-26T11:17:24","slug":"guardian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=99863","title":{"rendered":"(Guardian) Atlantic Ocean circulation at weakest in a millennium, say scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Atlantic Ocean circulation that underpins the Gulf Stream, the weather system that brings warm and mild weather to Europe, is at its weakest in more than a millennium, and climate breakdown is the probable cause, according to new data.<\/p>\n<p>Further weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) could result in more storms battering the UK, <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2020\/jan\/08\/weakening-of-gulf-stream-could-bring-colder-uk-winters\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">more intense winters<\/a> and an increase in damaging heatwaves and droughts across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists predict that the AMOC will weaken further if global heating continues, and could reduce by about 34% to 45% by the end of this century, which could bring us close to a <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/oct\/09\/tipping-points-could-exacerbate-climate-crisis-scientists-fear\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201ctipping point\u201d<\/a> at which the system could become irrevocably unstable.
