(a title strange, yet true,<br \/>\nTo thee of all kings only due)<br \/>\nOh King of wounds! how shall I grieve for thee,<br \/>\nWho in all grief preventest me?<br \/>\nShall I weep blood? why thou has wept such store<br \/>\nThat all thy body was one door.<br \/>\nShall I be scourged, flouted, boxed, sold?<br \/>\n&#8216;Tis but to tell the tale is told.<br \/>\n&#8216;My God, my God, why dost thou part from me? &#8216;<br \/>\nWas such a grief as cannot be.<br \/>\nBut how then shall I imitate thee, and<br \/>\nCopy thy fair, though bloody hand?<br \/>\nSurely I will revenge me on thy love,<br \/>\nAnd try who shall victorious prove.<br \/>\nIf thou dost give me wealth, I will restore<br \/>\nAll back unto thee by the poor.<br \/>\nIf thou dost give me honour, men shall see,<br \/>\nThe honour doth belong to thee.<br \/>\nI will not marry; or, if she be mine,<br \/>\nShe and her children shall be thine.<br \/>\nMy bosom friend, if he blaspheme thy name,<br \/>\nI will tear thence his love and fame.<br \/>\nOne half of me being gone, the rest I give<br \/>\nUnto some Chapel, die or live.<br \/>\nAs for thy passion &#8211; But of that anon,<br \/>\nWhen with the other I have done.<br \/>\nFor thy predestination I&#8217;ll contrive,<br \/>\nThat three years hence, if I survive,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll build a spittle, or mend common ways,<br \/>\nBut mend mine own without delays.<br \/>\nThen I will use the works of thy creation,<br \/>\nAs if I us&#8217;d them but for fashion.<br \/>\nThe world and I will quarrel; and the year<br \/>\nShall not perceive, that I am here.<br \/>\nMy music shall find thee, and ev&#8217;ry string<br \/>\nShall have his attribute to sing;<br \/>\nThat all together may accord in thee,<br \/>\nAnd prove one God, one harmony.<br \/>\nIf thou shalt give me wit, it shall appear;<br \/>\nIf thou hast giv&#8217;n it me, &#8217;tis here.<br \/>\nNay, I will read thy book, and never move<br \/>\nTill I have found therein thy love;<br \/>\nThy art of love, which I&#8217;ll turn back on thee,<br \/>\nO my dear Saviour, Victory!<br \/>\nThen for thy passion &#8211; I will do for that &#8211;<br \/>\nAlas, my God, I know not what.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;George Herbert (1593-1633)<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today we remember <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GeorgeHerbert?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GeorgeHerbert<\/a>, priest and poet.<\/p>\n<p>A pivotal figure and one of Britain&#39;s foremost devotional lyricists. After much soul searching he gave up his political aspirations and became a priest at the age of 36.
