This was a decisive but not an overwhelming victory for Barack Obama and the Democrats. As I put it in the lead of my U.S. News column for next week, it was a victory that was overdetermined and underdelivered.

It’s going to be a long four years. Obama hasn’t even set foot in the Oval Office and we’re already hearing talk about a national holiday for the [i][President-elect][/i].

Regarding the vote of the “affluent” (top of the top-and-bottom), I wonder if some of those votes are more from a desire for safety nets for their assets (real estate, 401(k)s, stocks) than any polity.
