Nobody on the other side was ever an enemy. They were always an adversary.
—Mark Shields on the Lehrer News Hour. You need to guess about whom he was speaking before you look. It would be very helpful if this could be remembered by all in the current Anglican debate–KSH.
I always thought Mark Shields had a strong resemblance to Buddy Hackett
The politician to whom Shields refers, although sometimes exasperating, was also strikingly avuncular. You could share an elevator with him and get out feeling as though he were an old friend.
Pray God that our political life and systems will return to this former age, and that we once again learn to treat our adversaries with respect instead of contempt. I agree, Kendall: this goes for the Church also, which it seems to me has been infected with the same poisonous politics of destruction.
