This season of our lives finds us with elderly parents in failing health who can no longer travel. After spending Thanksgiving in West Virginia and Christmas in Tennessee, we are spending New Year’s Day (along with New Year’s Eve) at home cooking, reading, playing games and hoping for a Snow Day tomorrow to delay the start of school. (We’re also hanging out our blue and gold flag in preparation for the Fiesta Bowl tomorrow…GO MOUNTAINEERS!)
At home with my husband and 4-year-old grandson watching the Gators play in the Capital One Bowl. So far, the game is not going so well for the Orange & Blue, but it’s early yet. Traditional greens and black-eyed peas for dinner later.
With my wife, going to watch the Rose Bowl on TV. She is an Illinois grad and never thought in her lifetime that the team would make it to this prestigious bowl game. (Interestingly, the coverage of the Rose parade paid relatively little attention to the Nativity float, did anyone else notice this?)
At home with my wife quietly. At the beginning of last year I was fighting cancer and being infused with all manner of poison. I am now in remission with splendid lab results.
Towards the end of last year I was attacked by pleural pneumonia (I was shown the X Rays yesterday of the worst moments when my children were rushed here to see me because it was feared I would die) and now my lung is clear and nearly back to its normal size.
God was good to me last year and so were an extraordinary number of people who prayed my family and me through it all. I pray this year may be gentler! I promise to be good and do my exercises. Gracious I never thought I’d commit to exercise!
At home with my husband. Son-in-law is coming up for lunch and to drop off Christmas gifts from family in Minnesota & Arizona. Neighbor just dropped by to give us her annual photo calendar. Still glowing from the lengthy visit we had yesterday with the Ugandan priest and his wife who are staying in our guest house . Much snow on the ground, not a cloud in the sky…incredibly beautiful Colorado day! Began our seventh read through of the Bible this morning… our annual New Years Day activity.
Elizabeth and I were home alone last evening and the house was quiet with us and the three dogs and cats. Nathaniel was at a friend’s house, Selimah was at a friend’s house, and Abigial was at a focus camp in New Hampshire as a camp counselor.
We ended up watching the movie Hot Fuzz together. What a lot of fun it was!
So far today I am loving the chance to watch English Football. Watched Manchester United play Birmingham City earlier and am currently watching Tottenham Hotspur against Aston Villa.
After an Eve of Holy Name/New Year’s Eve liturgy & party, and a Holy Name service today, we are taking a New Year’s walk, then watching a movie. This evening I am looking forward to the New Year’s concert from Vienna (some interesting pieces this year!). I have some correspondence to catch up, and I am also planning to do some thinking about the coming year.
Just the immediate family, with a phone call to my parents later.
We stayed up for midnight, and then got up early for watching the Rose Parade, as usual.
Lunch was ham, split peas, turnips & rudebegahs (sp?), and boiled cabbage. (I don’t know whose idea this menu was, but apart from the ham, I can assure you I did not select it!) Tonight we will grill bratwurst and after over the coals s’mores.
At home watching football with my wife Lucy. This time 2007 I was recovering from major surgery on gall bladder and pancreas, and my appetite had not returned. By early February I had all the tubes and drains out and was beginning to eat. So this has been a year of recovery, for which I am very grateful.
I spent it at work…keeping the radars and their respective automation systems operational for a piece of the United States National Air Space. After work, my beloved and I took our children to a kid’s restaurant/arcade with a rodent mascot. They had a blast.
Tomorrow, I am on orders to attend training out of state. I will be gone for about a month. I will miss my family very much for almost the entire first month of the new year. When I am away, we say prayers together as a family over the phone every night. It helps the miles disappear for a few minutes. Glory to God in the highest!
I am so very fortunate and blessed.
With my 17 year old daughter shooting pheasants in 27 degree temp, 25 mph wind, and driving snow. I got four and she got two with her little .28 ga. double. A fine day.
They are going on right now. I am taking a breather in the middle of the second section. They will be running until Saturday, same as TEC GOEs. Thanks for your prayers, Jim. We really appreciate them!

Spending it at home with the family and the Mizzou football team. Sorry, Hogs.

We don’t watch football.
Kendall,
“Hot Fuzz” is a great fun movie!

Traveled to seminary to take GOE’s starting tomorrow morning.

I spent the day teaching second day skiers how to ski on Taos mountain. Very satisfying! Blessings to all, Ken

I was preparing for Diocese of Quincy General Ordination Exams (while taking various breaks to watch college football, of course!).
Hey, Townsend, when are your GOE’s? I’ll be sure to put you on my prayer calendar!

No problem, The Lord grant you wisdom!
