Muslim is spared a speeding ban so he can drive between his two wives

When it comes to avoiding a ban for speeding, the courts hear every excuse in the book.

But yesterday one motorist offered what must be a unique reason why he should keep his licence.

Mohammed Anwar said a ban would make it difficult to commute between his two wives and fulfil his matrimonial duties.

His lawyer told a Scottish court the Muslim restaurant owner has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow – he is allowed up to four under his religion – and sleeps with them on alternate nights.

He also needed his driving licence to run his restaurant in Falkirk, Stirlingshire.

Airdrie Sheriff Court had heard that Anwar was caught driving at 64mph in a 30mph zone in Glasgow, fast enough to qualify for instant disqualification.

Anwar admitted the offence, but Sheriff John C. Morris accepted his plea not to be banned and allowed him to keep his licence.

I suppose its just a matter of a few years ago that Mr. Anwar would have been deported for his bigamy; decades, prison; a century, hanging.

  2. Jeffersonian says:

Is that the Archbishop of Canterbury I hear applauding?

I believe the UK has approved welfare benefits for up to four wives, as well. The Islamization of Britain continues apace.

Maybe that Scottish-Pakistani Muslim Mona Siddiqui who’s always on the BBC with her ‘Thought for the day’ should comment on this. (You can listen to the program, if you have the stomach for it, on podcast.)
Personally, I’ve never understood how a Muslim woman could be teaching about Islam (she’s a professor at Glasgow University), but then she never really touches on the particularities of her religion. In fact, I suspect she’s probably embarrassed by Islam and the behavior of her fellow Asian-Brits (like those who tried to carbomb Glasgow airport or the plot to blow up the airliners). We should pray that she’ll learn the Gospel – maybe from Michael Nazir Ali – and discover true faith (and true martyrdom?).

    (1) I don’t care how many wives he needs to visit. If he drives 64 mph in a 30 mph zone, he’s going to kill somebody else’s wife one day. (2) The UK is insane to allow polygamy. This is cultural suicide.

  5. Irenaeus says:

Sadly misguided. Driving 64 mph in a 30 mph zone poses a real danger to others.

Automatically losing your license is a stern penalty. But if it applies to others, Anwar should face some real consequences here.

If Anwar needs his driver’s license to run his restaurants or maintain his marriages, then he should face a penalty as serious as losing the license: e.g., spending one day a week in jail for the next few months.

DB [#1]: Bigamy was not a capital crime in Britain a century ago. I’ll be it had lost that status by the mid-19th century.

    #4, carrying the thought you expressed further;
If the Muslim in question had killed someone when driving at high speed would he be taken to court, sued for manslaughter, and kicked in jailed or praised because of the great love he had for his wives that led him to drive at such a reckless speed leading to a death of another human being??
Many years ago A friend of mine working in Turkey told us that periodically some Turkish citizens would dliberately place themselves in danger by walking in front of a moving car. The driver would do his best to avoid the person(s) sometimes placing himself in great danger. The persons would walk on praising Allah for his protection. An alternative driver action could result in injury or death to the civilian and the driver being imprisoned or possibly executed. The person who told me this story swears it is true.

  7. Br. Michael says:

Can a non-Muslim have more than one wife? And is there any age restriction on the age of the wives?

    5. Irenaeus -quoting your quote!

“DB [#1]: Bigamy was not a capital crime in Britain a century ago. I’ll be it had lost that status by the mid-19th century.”

True it has not been a capital crime for a very, very long time. But it is illegal. Unlike Alex Ferguson who got off a speeding offence without a ticket because he had to go the loo, I’m sure the police would not let me get away with such an excuse

  9. Laocoon says:

Maybe he should move his wives to the same place – or get one of them to drive him where he needs to go (“Honey, could you drive me to my other wife’s house?”) In any event, he shouldn’t be driving, as #4 and #5 say.

  10. Irenaeus says:

Bill C [#8]: Agreed. And Ferguson posed little risk to others by driving on the shoulder of the road.
