Utah Episcopalians spell out what they want in new bishop

Among other attributes, she or he must have found grace in personal failure, an experience that can make one a better leader, Tendick says. “We’re hoping the applicants have dealt with failure in a way that has helped them to grow and learn.”

One’s response to failure also can be a barometer of humility, which undergirds many of the other attributes Episcopalians are looking for in a leader, he says.

Among those listed are: a love for sharing the story of Jesus Christ and embracing the guidance

of the Holy Spirit; compassion; integrity; communication skills; welcoming of diversity; experience with rural and remote populations; and a willingness to learn about Western and LDS cultures.

Update: According to National Church statistics, the Average Sunday Attendance of the Diocese of Utah has gone from 1,924 in 1998 to 1,612 in 2008, a decline of 16%.

Another update: The U.S. Census calculates that Utah had a population of 2,233,169 in 2000 and as of 2009 now has 2,784,572, a growth of 24.69%.

Outrightly saying we want a failure to be our next bishop? Does this strike anyone else as bizarre?

AotF, I think they want a bishop who can learn from mistakes and failures, an obviously absent capacity amongst the HOB generally or prior occupants of this Diocesan See particularly, including the PB.

Utah is a tough place for “gentiles” in the LDS terminology. According to Shelter in the Storm, there is only one non-TEC Anglican congregation in the state.

The diocese had a rough time from 2002 through 2008 with Members down 25 percent and ASA down by 18 percent. The one bright spot was that Plate & Pledge increased 9 percent MORE than inflation. I was surprised therefore that the article would focus on reducing the need for funds from the diocese. In addition, there were 15 of the 23 churches in the diocese in 2008 which had an ASA of less than 70. Churches this small would need financial help. A bit like the diocese is preaching to the choir. Also in 2008, there were only 6 churches with Plate & Pledge of more than $150 thousand. The new bishop will find Utah to be a challenge. Statmann

    Frdarin,

Good to hear from you. May the Lord bless you and your congregation. Who knows how the Lord may use your witness in Utah?
