From the elves: A request, and a question (updated)

Update (Friday evening):

1. As to the problem of text disappearing to the left after a blockquote when viewing the “recent comments” page using Internet Explorer, I think this problem is now solved. Please report any continuing problems you find, if any, being sure to note what web browser you are using.

2. I thought I had solved the right overflow problem (i.e. when there’s a very long link in the comment, which messes up the right margin). But my “fix” to hide the overflow, just created new problems. I’ve gone back to the original settings, which means if there is a long link, it will still cause the comment text to overlap the right menu bar.

The EASIEST “fix” is for commenters to avoid posting long links. If you’ve got a long link, please either use Tinyurl.com or learn how to format your link so that instead of pasting a long url www.abcdefghijkl…. etc., it will instead point to the link like: alphabet

Hi all.
We’ve not bombarded you all with too much admin stuff of late after a month or more of lots of admin messages when the new blog was launched in late May.

A few housekeeping details.

1. First the request: In general, if you’re contacting us with a story idea or a technical question or problem, PLEASE e-mail us rather than using the “Private Message” feature to contact us. Our address, as always: T19elves@yahoo.com

We welcome private messages on other topics, but e-mail works best if/when we want to forward something to Kendall or our other elf helpers. Thanks.

2. A question: It’s been awhile since we’ve raised the question of any bugs that need fixing or any features you’d like to see. Or opened the floor for questions and problems. What’s on your mind? How can we help? A few folks have been e-mailing us about unwanted e-mail from T19/Stand Firm. We can help with that. We are also always available to help tackle registration / login problems. Let us know in the comments or by e-mail how we can help.

3. Finally: we hope within a week to make some progress again on adding more links, Anglican and non-Anglican to the sidebar. Kendall’s travels which left us in charge fro two weeks in July, and our own overwhelming workload of late have meant that any blog formatting changes or adding features or links had to be put on hold. But we’d like to get back to that as soon as we can. We’ve saved all the links readers have already sent in as suggestions. But we always welcome other suggestions!

Feel free to use this as an open thread to give us your gripes, your questions, your suggestions…. Especially for newer readers / members who may not have had a chance to weigh in on these questions in May, we’d love to hear from you.

I think its great as it is – no gripes here.

Well, maybe one minor one. I miss the old header. I know it’s retro, and generic, and lots of blogs have it, and the new header is stylish and modern and unique, and someone put a lot of work into it; but, well, the old one was just, you know, Titusonenine. And I miss it.

  2. The_Elves says:

LOL. You can always go gaze at it fondly when you need a hit of that old look!

    It’s still online:
    http://titusonenine.classicalanglican.net/

Go read some of the great classic threads!

Oh, now that’s a fun idea! Seriously! Maybe we will pull together a list of late great T19 (Cannet version) classics — a separate category for everyone’s favorite posts from the old site. Send us your nominations for the classics from the old site!!

  3. Pageantmaster Ù† says:

I think this is looking great but one thing I have noticed is that on the ‘Recent Comments’ page that sometimes the comments justify themselves off the viewable area to the left.

There is an example on there now in Eclipse’s comment at 3.24 pm BST today 08/02/07 and iterestingly the change in justification to the left starts in her comment immediately after a quote.

Or it may be my IE browser. I have also noticed it on earlier pages on the main pages.

Thanks for all your hard work.

    Pageantmaster, you rock!
    That’s a really important discovery.

There’s a difference in how Internet Explorer formats the recent comments page than Firefox. I’m going to have to see what I can do to fix that. It will probably be on Saturday that I’ll get time to play around with the templates.

Web design is still new to me. I jumped into the T19 design with hardly any experience, but we had to make the change so suddenly, we did it on the fly. I have a persistent weakness in that I forget to check out how the formats appear on different browsers or monitors. And thus sometimes get unpleasant surprises. This has now happened twice where I’ve failed to catch problems with how the blog displays in Internet Explorer since I’ve stopped using it except rare occasions.

(Or I could order all of our readers to switch to Firefox maybe?! That would make my life easier!!! LOL!).

Seriously, may I especially ask Explorer and Netscape or Safari users, please feel free and even BE DILIGENT to let me/us know if you find formatting glitches and problems. I’m all too likely to miss them.

We really always welcome e-mail about any concern or suggestion:

  5. Stu Howe says:

I hate to say it but I’m having a similar problem in Fire Fox with the comments for posting under the Cannon Anderson article.

  6. libraryjim says:

echoing Pagentmaster, I’ve found that after someone puts in a ‘blockquote’, that’s when the words ‘exit, stage left’ (or is it right? I always get those confused).

  7. The_Elves says:

#5, Stu, that’s a separate problem. That’s a problem when someone posts a link that it very long and it overflows from the main section of the blog into the right hand menu bar. Basically it removes the right margin and ALL the text then overflows into the right menu.

I’ve fixed the thread in question. And I’ve asked Greg to change how the blog handles “overflow” settings so that even when folks post long links, the blog will truncate the display and not mess up the margin. That should be dealt with quite soon.

It helps though if commenters get in the habit of using tinyurl.com or similar service instead of posting huge long links….

  8. Sherri says:

As for “classic” T19 threads – there were some threads of recommended reading that I wish could be made easy to find. 🙂

  9. MargaretG says:

I too have the right justify problem on firefox — not on every thread, but when it happens it tends to happen to all the comments on that thread.

  10. The_Elves says:

Yes Margaret. if one comment runs over the margin due to a long link, they ALL do. I wrote Greg again last night asking him to fix it…

  11. The_Elves says:

Sherri, they could be in the “books” category. It’s not one that was used often, but I tried to categorize some of the recommended reading threads, I think.

If there’s something specific you’re looking for, give a shout and we’ll see what we can find.

  12. The_Elves says:

Oops sorry, forgot the link: Books category link on old blog is here
    http://titusonenine.classicalanglican.net/?cat=48

  13. The_Elves says:

All, I’ve tried changing the margin settings, etc. in the Recent Comments page. Things are a BIT better, but the way Explorer handles block quotes is very funky compared to Firefox. After each blockquote, the text seems to keep shifting further left, so eventually, even with a big left margin, after about 4 or 5 block quotes on a page, some of the text is STILL disappearing to the left.

Very odd. Will keep working on it.

  14. The_Elves says:

Shoot, hiding the overflow doesn’t help, because it then hides the other comments. DARN.

Ok, still trying to fix this problem with long links and right hand overflow.
    Stay tuned.

  15. The_Elves says:

Oh, interesting. The long link problem seems to be in Firefox, not Explorer. Explorer seems to be wrapping the long link above without problem. This is highly annoying to have such browser-specific formatting issues!!

Greg may be able to give me some help tomorrow. But if anyone else knows CSS and wants to help me figure out these margin and formatting issues (specifically re: overflow and how blockquotes interact with other margins) I’d welcome the help!

  16. The_Elves says:

I’ve gone back to the default visible overflow setting we had before. So we’re back to comments flowing into the right hand menu in Firefox.

For those of you who might be CSS geeks, this webpage pretty much describes the exact problem we’re having:
    firefox word-wrap issue

  17. The_Elves says:

In the updated text above, I wrote:

    [blockquote]If you’ve got a long link, please either use Tinyurl.com …[/blockquote]

    Here’s the link for tinyurl.com: http://tinyurl.com/

It’s fast and easy. If you’ve got a long link, please consider using it.

  18. The_Elves says:

And here’s how to create a link to a web address (url), using Bulletin Board code, which is what works best in the comments here.

Here’s how Bulletin Board code works for links. It’s actually easier than HTML:

     the name

thus for a link to T19 it looks like this:
    Titusonenine

    You can read more here.

  19. The_Elves says:

    HOORAY!

Re: the “recent comments” page and text disappearing to the left (Comments #3, #4, #6, #13)
    when using Internet Explorer

That problem should now be fixed. The fix was putting an invisible bottom border under the blockquote. Odd, but it worked.

The right overflow problem is still an issue, so if anyone’s got brilliant ideas for a word-wrap hack in Firefox, I’d love to hear it.

  20. Neal in Dallas says:

Goodness. Things disappearing on the left and things overflowing on the right. When the things on the left reappear, would they be called ‘reasserters’ and when the overflow on the right is resolved are they called ‘reappraisers’?

     This elf is groaning. 🙂

  21. Rob Eaton+ says:

    Elves,
    Thanks for all your diligence.
    I have no problems.
Well,,, actually, I do….. after the switch to be in league with SF, very rarely have I been able to submit a comment with one attempt. I learned quickly to copy my comment, click submit, wait for the thread to come back – without my comment posted, paste the comment back into the comment box, and click submit (again). Then it posts. It is a problem with both T1:9 and SF, so it must be a platform problem. Any thoughts?

  22. Rob Eaton+ says:

This last comment went on the first try. Of course. The whole thing feels like what would happen with the addition security add-on, taking more than an allotted time to compose, and then even if the math answer was correct, losing the whole comment due to taking too much time.

    RGEaton

  23. The_Elves says:

Rob+ I’ve sometimes had the same problem with comments not posting on first try. And several other commenters as well. Glad you are in the habit of saving your comments first. It’s a good habit and saves a lot of aggravation.

I’m wondering if at the time you have comments vanish, whether you have windows open for BOTH T19 and StandFirm. I’m thinking that the software may find it confusing to have someone logged in on both sites simultaneously. But that’s just a guess based on my own experience.

  24. Rob Eaton+ says:

    “The_Elves”,
Your suggestion that I might have had simultaneous windows open with both T1:9 and SF….Oh, my God, my Savior, assist me in this dark hour….. I had not even come close to contemplating such an enormous taxing of my computer nor of my own emotional and spiritual well being by having both of these portals open to me at the same time…. in fact, just typing this in has caused the display on my laptop dim… and I’m feeling a little woozy…. no, I must resist…..it’s…..it’s getting…worse……I feel myself…….slipping……NO!…………Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…..

    {Robert, closing now will cause other users to cease to be logged in. Do you wish to continue?}

  25. Br_er Rabbit says:

Hello? Is anybody in here? Helloooooo…..
I’m feeling a little woozy myself.

  26. Pageantmaster Ù† says:

    I’m here – wondering what I have done! #2
Brer = perhaps you need a tonic to get you up and hopping?

  27. The_Elves says:

Pageantmaster, my thanks was for your reporting of your problem. It was a real issue, not just you, and something I’d not been aware of.

Most importantly, you reminded me that (DUH!!!) I hadn’t checked how all the different templates display in Internet Explorer, as I still forget that there are differences in how different browsers handle formatting.

  28. Pageantmaster Ù† says:

Thanks Elves – just joshing. Hope you manage to corall the comments.
