Gracious God, we offer thanks for the lives and work of Richard Rolle, Walter Hilton, and Margery Kempe, hermits and mystics, who, passing through the cloud of unknowing, beheld thy glory. Help us, after their examples, to see thee more clearly and love thee more dearly, in the Name of Jesus Christ our Savior; who with thee and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
I am not exactly sure why Margery Kempe is considered a hermit or mystic.
I’m not exactly sure why these three have been conflated in the first place. But, since I don’t use this absurd list I suppose it doesn’t matter.
Today is also the feast day for St Wenceslas.
I don’t think Walter Hilton would have been exactly happy about being included in the same company with Margery Kempe and Richard Rolle. It’s a bit like having a common feast day for Thomas More and Thomas Cranmer. I suppose there is a sense in which one could argue that both were martyrs. However . . .
