William Rhoden: Yes, Belichick Really Is a Genius

With all due respect to Paul Brown, Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry and Bill Walsh, Bill Belichick is the genius coach of all time.

His New England Patriots have taken on all comers and triumphed over all styles. In this salary-cap era, when players move from team to team, Belichick has managed to stay one step ahead of the competition.

On Sunday, for the 18th time this season, Belichick entered the interview room and gave a monologue about another game his team had won. The victories have come in all shapes and sizes: late-game runaways, out-and-out routs, flaw-ridden nail-biters.

Yesterday, New England tripped, stumbled and willed itself to its fourth American Football Conference championship under Belichick.

    I don’t recall any of the men in the first sentence being personally fined a half million dollars for cheating.

    Amen!

  3. Old Soldier says:

    OK guys, set aside sour grapes and explain point by point how NE cheated and how that skewed the results of any play or game.

    Go Pats

    As a Pats fan, I was and remain confused about the whole “cheating” scandal. No one can explain to me how videotaping is different than having employees in the stands observing and making notes and diagrams — which everyone agrees is legal. Yet I don’t understand why Belichick didn’t use this method instead.

    I think what it boils down to is that if the Pats go undefeated and all the way, the cheating scandal will be a undeserved blot on that accomplishment, but one which Belichick brought on himself. 🙁

    Go Pats! (Hoping for many sacks of Archie’s younger spawn).

    He cheated. Go Giants.

  6. Charley says:

    No 3. the league doesn’t lighten your wallet by $.5MM for nuttin’

  7. Old Soldier says:

    Charley, please, the league is run by lawyers.

  8. Will B says:

    Quit whining. The Patriots did not cheat to attain this record. The league is not in a conspiracy to skew everything the Patriots’ way. Was Belicheck fined? Yeah, and if any number of other teams were caught, they’d be fined too. Did videotaping a game or a practice give the Pats an edge in any game this year? NO. So quit whining;
