Some of these are pretty lame. One of my favorites will always be…1993, radio DJ’s Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw of KGB convince thousands the space shuttle Discovery is about to make an emergency landing at Montgomery Field (a small community airport) in San Diego, CA. The police were less than amused about having to deal with the crowds once they found out there wasn’t even any shuttle in orbit at the time.

One group I worked with in my last job was very fond of practicle jokes. Our favorite was to take the ball out of a person’s mouse (this was before laser mice) and put it in his desk drawer.
The most elaborate hoax I ever saw was with an old CRT screen. The Tech support person had taken apart the monitor, turned the screen upside down and put the monitor back together so that the screen appeared upside down for the programmer. When he called about it, tech support simply came and turned the monitor upside down on the person’s PC and proped it up with duct tape.
