    Dan Martins, is that you?

Given the title, I thought it might be Hillary suspending her campaign and endorsing Barack, or Rowan Williams going to GAFCON, or Bush apologizing for the war in Iraq, but no … it’s only sport. Sigh.

    Eamus Catuli!

  4. Nikolaus says:

Oh puhleeeez! It’s only May 1. Besides, it’s not like they have a noticable lead in the Central Division.

    Cards Rule & Cubs Drool!

  5. Old Soldier says:

In a perfect world, the Cubbies win the NL. They then lose the World Series to the Red Sox in 7.

  6. Fr. Greg says:

Well, Kendall, when you’re a Cubs fan, ya gotta enjoy what you can get, when you can get it. Go Cubbies!

As for a perfect world, well, Boston finally won it all, so in my perfect world, this year it’s the Cubs winning the World Series over either Boston or the White Sox.

My father was born a Cub fan (his father had a contract with the Cubs but was sent to WWI and injured before he could play), lived his life as a Cub fan, and died a Cubs fan (at the age of 76) without ever seeing the Cubs win the World Series. One thing he taught me – don’t get your hopes up until August at the earliest.

At some level I think that if they won the series it would ruin their magic… but I sure would love to see them at least win the pennant.

I like to say that the Cubs are good at teaching Chicagoans about the redemptive nature of suffering. Even though they pain us year, after year, after year we love them all the same.

Oh that’s right: get our hopes up! Da Cubs leave me feeling like the groom in a spider marriage every year. The honeymoon starts out so great and ends rather tragically, yes?

If it weren’t for the fact that there is no other known professional baseball team in the midwest, I would seek solace elsewhere.

Yeah it’s too early…but right now, it feels good. Eamus Catuli! and “it’s gonna happen”. Cubs and Red Sox? Despite the two recent world championships by the Sox, I suspect that if the Cubbies and Bosox ever met in the world series, both teams would find a way to lose in seven games! The Cubs have broken my heart more times than I can count but they’ve already hooked me again. This just might be..the year!

It is only May, but I would also love to see a BoSox-Cubbies World Series. I’d be rooting for the BoSox (long-time fan who married into it), but would be happy to see the Cubs take it all and get the goat off their back.

  11. Ouroboros says:

Go Cubs! As for it just being May 1, that’s true, but a strong start is so important! I love my Red Sox, but they have broken the curse, so if the Sox and Cubs make it to the World Series, I’ll root for the Cubs as long as they give my Sox seven games. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Remember, Kendall, hope is the cruelest of all emotions.

Years ago, when I was living in Dale City, VA of all places, at someplace obscure like a Wendy’s, I think, I responded to something my young son said with “Well, you know, hope springs eternal.” The man behind me immediately broke in with, “You must be a Cubs fan!” Well, I admitted I went to college in Chicago, and every spring we would catch a Cubs game as soon as it got even a little warm. We chatted during lunch and reminisced, and had a great time. My son was a BIG baseball fan, and these two strangers talking his game made his day! The Nationals are now my team, but part of me will be pulling for the Cubs every spring!

  14. Fr. Greg says:

Crabby, I’m not a Nats fan, although I don’t dislike them. I do think that they should have been called the Washington “Weasels”, but that has nothing to do with the team per se. In any event, I want to tip my hat to them for doing their part recently to ensure that the Braves do NOT make the playoffs this year.

  15. Crabby in MD says:

Fr. Greg! Watch out, my husband is a simple (oops! I meant civil) servant! Besides, “Nats” sounds just like “gnats” which the government spends an inordinate amount of time swatting at when it should be doing something constructive! I tried working for the government and it drove me nuts. They goes out of their way to shoot themselves in the foot! Sorta like the Cubs! So now, I’m just nuts for my Nats.

  16. Fr. Greg says:

Crabby: Well, as long as you’re not a Braves (or a Yankees) fan…;-)

  17. Crabby in MD says:

Dear Fr. Greg: On that you can count on!
