Not only did Mr. Buckles serve with distinction in WWI, he was taken in Manilla at the onset of WWII, and was interned by the Japanese for several years as well.
Mr. Buckles was in Kansas City on Sunday at the performance by the Kansas City Symphony outside of Union Station. It was truly an honor to be able to celebrate Memorial Day with him.
Our celebration had a 101st Airborne veteran of the Bastogne siege. Amazingly, this 82-year was recently in the paper. He was accosted by a would be mugger. He told the kid, “You’ll need a lot bigger knife than that,” and proceeded to kick the mugger “strategically”, leaving him writhing on the pavement. Predictably, he refused my offer of a ride home, preferring to walk.
