A tie will likely give the election to McCain insofar as populous places like NY and CA will go heavily for Obama, yielding the same Electoral College result as if they had won them by 5,000 votes.
If the Republicans can mount a successful 527 campaign like the Swift Boat Vets did against Kerry though, I think this could turn very quickly. One possible avenue: Michelle Obama and all the outrageous things she has said……
I concur with KevinBabb’s assessment. This is very surprising. I think at least a few points in this latest poll may be a national security blip. Republicans almost always get a bump whenever security becomes an issue. And Russia’s recent behavior has not helped Obama where as I think it probably has helped McCain. But even so, with the enormous unpopularity of G W Bush and the Republicans in general I am left in something close to awe.

Not looking good for our secular messiah.
Obama is stilling doing better in the elctoral college projections though and that’s what counts: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/maps/obama_vs_mccain/

Given all of the things going against the Republicans this year, these results amaze me.

Interesting, but it is before the conventions and the first debate. We’ll see what happens.
It will be close. Fivethirtyeight has Obama winning by 2 points, but with a sizeable electoral college lead.
