For 275 years, St. Michael’s Church has towered above Charleston as the city grew and transformed around it.
Its 186-foot steeple has long served as a navigational landmark, lookout and witness to some of the defining moments of the city and nation.
The narrow wooden steps — each worn in the center by centuries of foot traffic — wind up the brick-lined steeple, above the church’s eight bells, to the top.
It’s not just the ascent that takes one’s breath away, it’s the reward of a 360-degree view of the city.
“I often come up here to write my sermons,” said the Rev. Al Zadig Jr., rector of St. Michael’s since 2007.
It’s survived wars, hurricanes, an earthquake and nearly three centuries of Charleston history. Now, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church is marking its 275th anniversary. https://t.co/w2sJ4iiUsM
