Boy some of these stories were kind of . . . reaching.

But the one that was just all wet — and indicative of the fantasies of Time’s writers and editors — was the one about evangelicals.

They trotted out the old “evangelicals switching sides at last” story — tired and desperate as it is. But once again there was practically no difference in the traditional voting trends of evangelicals.

And notice the subtle definitional changes in the brief paragraph:

Here we have the whole idea of “extending concern” to “economic inequality” [code for State-forced redistribution of wealth] and “the environment” [code for State-forced carbon taxes and other ridiculous redistributions dreamed of by those who use the environment as a cloak for socialism].

But then they use — Rick Warren??? — as their example of evangelicals who “took up their prophetic calls in response to Democratic blandishments, Bush-fatigue and an increasingly vocal youth generation that finds its church unduly pushy on issues like homosexuality.”

What a hoot! Rick Warren voted for McCain and opposes — heartily — gay marriage. He supported Prop 8.

Here’s what he thinks about politics:

So in order to create the “look — the evangelicals are finally converting and shifting our way” they literally have to redefine the words again to include Rick Warren.

It’s just a sorry sorry story about evangelicals.

Sarah #1 I think that you are right that Time has overstated their case re: voting trends of evangelicals. I do think, as you do, that their other story choices were right on the money.
