The Charleston City Council has passed the first reading of a wide-ranging mask ordinance that would impact everyone in the city, including public and private schools.
City leaders passed the ordinance Tuesday night with a 10 to 3 vote. The ordinance still needs two more readings before going into effect.
The ordinance would require almost everyone over the age of two to wear a mask in public and private settings. In addition, there are built-in exceptions for certain medical conditions, eating, drinking, smoking and in situations where it is not feasible β like while exercising.
Itβs the most expansive local ordinance and it applies to anyone regardless of vaccination status. The mandate would apply indoor building β both public and private β as well as permitted gathering like protests and concerts
