Thanks for pointing to this Kendall. I note that Abp. Gomez is not listed. I’m guessing that means that he’s not one of the signatories to the most recent statement of the Steering Committee?

  2. Henry says:

++Gomez is on the list, just not as an “officer”.

Gomez is listed (5th on the list) and he was in attendance from what we’ve heard. He was in England for the Oxford Consultation and for the CoE Synod.

The Global South Steering Committee (GSSC) comprises:

President: Most Rev’d Peter J. Akinola, Nigeria
General Secretary: Most Rev’d John Chew, Southeast Asia
Treasurer: Most Rev’d Mouneer Anis, Jerusalem and the Middle East.

    Most Rev’d Emmanuel Kolini, Rwanda
Most Rev’d Drexel Gomez, West Indies
Most Rev’d Bernard Malango, Central Africa
Most Rev’d Gregory Venables, Southern Cone

  4. Nick Knisely says:

    Doh’. Thanks Henry and Elf-girl.

  5. Ephraim Radner says:

My understanding is the Abp. Gomez was NOT in attendance at the Steering Committee meeting — so he told those at the Oxford consultation, when he said that duties required him to return to the West Indies before the Steering Committee would be meeting, something he had alerted the chair some time before. Thus, I am confused by the release with his name on it. Perhaps he changed his plans; perhaps he was consulted by email. I really don’t know, but would welcome any clarification anyone could offer.

  6. The_Elves says:

Thank you Dr. Radner for the info about ++Gomez. I thought I’d read somewhere that the list on the Global South Anglican website was verified as to attendees, but I could have misunderstood.

Hopefully further clarification will be forthcoming. Apologies if my comment above is incorrect. Stay tuned all. If anyone has definitive info, please send it to Kendall and the elves. Our addresses are on the right under “About TitusOneNine”

  7. w.w. says:

If Martyn Minns were at the London meeting in his capacity as assoc. general secretary of the GS Steering Committee, he surely must know if the vote was unanimous, or who among =all= the members signed or =expressly assented= to the statement (and not just received a copy of it, as happened in a previous statement released by Archbishop Akinola). Minns is local; can one of you Virginians ask him about the specifics?

  8. John B. Chilton says:

Since T1:9 usually gets things up quickly perhaps that’s some source of the confusion. I thought the membership list link was circulating shortly after the steering committee issued its statement, and that it was known Orombi was in attendance. What remains unclear if the statement was unanimous and who was in attendance.

  9. Terry Wong says:

In answer to some queries above, the Steering Committee list merely states who is on it, not those who attended this particular Committee meeting. Normally, a statement is emailed to those who are not present for their comments before it is released. At this meeting, Abp Greg Venables, Abp Gomez and Abp Malango were not able to attend. As mentioned, Abp Henry Orombi participated, though he is not a member of the Steering Committee.

  10. John B. Chilton says:

Following on #9, I note that Terry Wong is a member of the steering committee’s secretariat, and that the link Kendall originally gave has been updated to state who was not in attendance.

  11. The_Elves says:

Terry, thank you for your very helpful comment in #9, and for updating the info on the Global South blog. Much appreciated!

    Terry Wong wrote above:

I suppose that our next logical questions are – did the normal thing happen at this meeting? Did Archbishops Gomez, Melango & Venables receive the normal email of this statement? Did they give their approval by reply email of the final text as released?

  13. John B. Chilton says:

As #12 notes Terry used the phrase “normally a statement is emailed for their comments…”

Does that mean it’s not clear whether it happened this time?
